Getting Ready
Garrett and I went to Cook’s Children’s Hospital this morning for his pre-op check in. Everything went well. We have to be there at 6:30am tomorrow and his surgery will start at 7:30am. He will be the first surgery tomorrow. We are happy about that so it won’t be too late when we get home.
When we get there Branden and I will take him back and change his clothes, I’m sure there will be more papers to sign and get him ready. They will give him a nose spray that will run to the back of his throat, the nurse that I talked to today said it will make him, “as drunk as a skunk”. When he gets drowsy we will leave him. That will be the hard part. They will put a mask on him that will make him sleepy. I was able to pick the smell of the gas that they will give him, I picked strawberry. After he is under they will put in his IV.
When each of the surgeons is finished with their procedure they will come out and talk to us. He will have his skin tag removed first then hernia repair. The surgeries should only take about 30 minutes. When he is finished he will go to recovery where a nurse will be with him while he wakes up. They will wake him up slowly. He will go to another recovery room called step down. We will meet him there. He will only be able to have 2 visitors at a time. So, I will stay with him and others can rotate with Branden. He will have to eat and drink before he can go home. But the things he gets to eat are jell-o, popsicles, juice, sprite things like that so it shouldn’t be a problem. I was comforted by the nurse when she said that he won’t go home until he is ready and not until we are comfortable and ready to take him home. We are not going to rush him. The nurse also wants us with him so we can tell them if he is nauseous or in pain.
With that said, I don’t know when we will be home tomorrow, or how he will be when we get home. Knowing Garrett he will be running around playing with his cars. But who knows?
Kids are very resilient and I know he will bounce back very quickly. We will keep everyone posted on how he is doing.
